Antarctic Ice Melting
Spring '08
The ice in the Antarctic sea is melting, at a rate so rapid it is
shocking scientists. A chunk of the Wilkins Ice Shelf about seven times
the size of Manhattan has just collapsed, and the rest of the shelf
looks like it's about to go down for the count as well. "These
things...are not re-forming," Sarah B. Das
of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts was quoted
as saying in the LA Times. "So once they're gone, they're gone."
Meanwhile, at the other end of the earth, the 20,000 - 25,000 polar
bears left are in serious danger because of the dwindling ice floes.
They need stopping points where they can rest on as they roam the sea
looking for tasty seals. When they can't find any, they drown. The
numbers of polar bears have declined by 25% by the end of the century
and the ones that are still around weigh notably less than previous
generations. Scientists speculate that they may be extinct by the end
of the century.
Think about that when you consider whether to curb your global
