Extinct Chinese Dolphin is Back!

On August 19th a Baiji Yangtze Dolphin was spotted
in the Yangtze, despite the fact that an expedition the previous year
could locate not a single one of this once common mammal after six
weeks of intensive searching. Though this hardly means that the dolphin
is staging a comeback -- who knows if the one spotted could even find a
mate -- it is kind of nice.
The dolphin, a 20 million year old species, was known as the goddess of
the Yangtze. It's guessed that its downfall was caused by severe
toxicity in the Yangtze as well as busy shipping traffic along the river.
